GOING DARK IN A SMALL BEDROOM

Going dark in a small bedroom can be a good idea. People sometimes think dark paint colors in small rooms can make the room seem smaller, but it’s all about picking the right color, and in this case, it was Sherwin Williams Naval.

Naval has been a favorite color of mine, since my mom used it in her dining room and kitchen years ago. It’s a gorgeous deep blue with cool undertones, and was the perfect choice for this little boy’s bedroom.
Picking Paint Colors
Picking paint colors is tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. The original color in this bedroom was a medium blue, but it had SO MUCH GRAY in it that it was very dull. Nothing stood out on the wall and it seemed very dark. There’s not a ton of natural light in the room, anyway.
I went against my initial instinct to go super light and ran in the opposite direction. Naval is about as dark as you can go, but it’s rich hue is a beautiful backdrop for furniture and wall decor. Choosing a more saturated (NOT grey) color was important in here. I was THISCLOSE to painting the room a deep green, but ultimately decided on navy.
A rich color like navy provides the perfect backdrop for wall art and furniture. Everything stands out so well, and you can bring in lighter colors with your accessories, so everything isn’t dark.
Be confident and go bold!
The cool, dark color recedes and makes the room look bigger. If you’re going dark in a small bedroom or other room, go ahead and go REALLY dark. Don’t choose that medium tone because it’s just going to make the naturally darker room seem even fuller. Be confident and go bold—you won’t be sorry.

I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!
