Easiest project ever!
If you’re in need of something to add some real style to your bedroom, look no further. This is the project for you. You don’t need a lot of specialized tools or skills, and can easily pick up everything you need in an afternoon. The results can be amazing for this DIY upholstered headboard.
This is extremely manageable for a twin bed, but you could replicate the steps for any size bed. It will just be a little larger and more expensive because of the extra materials.
- 36″ x 40″ flat wood board
- 1″ – 2″ foam
- Quilt batting
- 1 2/3 yards thick material (I used duck)
- Staple gun
- 3/8″ Staples
If you don’t have access to a saw, fear not. Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and have them cut the board for you in the dimensions you need. I made mind 36″ x 38″, but 36″ x 40″ would work, too.
Putting it together
This part literally only took 10 minutes to put together. I was pleasantly surprised when it went so fast.
Cut your foam with scissors to completely cover the surface of the board. Then, cover the foam with quilt batting, and carefully turn it over so the foam and batting are on the ground. Starting with one side, pull the batting tight and staple it in place on the board. Carefully work your way around the board.
Now, it’s time for the fun part–adding your pretty material! Put the fabric, pattern side down (tot the floor) and center the board over it (foam side down). Repeat the stapling process with the fabric, taking care to pull it taught before each staple and checking every few staples to be sure everything is still looking good on the front. If you’re using something with stripes or lines, you’ll need to pay more attention to keeping everything in line. It’s not super critical for a more freeform pattern like I used.
The only tricky part is working with the corners, but you can finesse it a little, so they lay nicely.
I like to just set the headboard on the boxsprings to hold it in place, but you can easily add on boards if you want it to stand alone or attach to the bedframe.
Making a DIY upholstered headboard is such a satisfying project. It’s quick to complete and can easily be the centerpiece of the entire bedroom. Please check out how I created a hanging carved wood headboard in this high-end hack.
